H.E. David Puig presents his credentials to the President of the Republic of Maldives

New Delhi - The Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Republic of India, David Puig, presented on November 22, 2022, the credentials that accredit him as a non-resident Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives.

During his meeting with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and other senior officials of the state of Maldives, Ambassador Puig stressed that his appointment as the first Dominican Ambassador to the Republic of Maldives demonstrates the willingness of the Dominican government to deepen its bonds of friendship and cooperation with the Maldives, especially in areas related to climate change and tourism. The Ambassador also highlighted the excellent working relationship that both countries have developed at the United Nations during the presidency of the United Nations General Assembly of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Abdulla Shahid, who visited the Dominican Republic in June 2022.

In an encounter with Minister Shahid, Ambassador David Puig thanked him for his support in highlighting, in various occasions, the challenge that sargassum represents for the Dominican Republic and other tourist destinations in the Caribbean region. Both agreed to continue consultation and cooperation within the framework of the United Nations and in other forums in which the Maldives and the Dominican Republic share similar views as Small Island Developing States.

While in Male, the capital of the Maldives, Ambassador David Puig's work agenda included a meeting with the Director for the Americas Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Maldives, Shiuneen Rasheed, which served to exchange views on how to strengthen the bilateral relations between the two countries. In that regard, H.E. David Puig invited the Maldivian authorities to consider the appointment of an Ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

Ambassador Puig also paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Tourism of the Maldives, Dr. Abdulla Mausoom. Both shared views on the development of tourism and the challenges faced by the growth of the sector  in their respective countries.
