Ambassador David Puig meets Anurag Thakur, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports

New Delhi –  Ambassador David Puig met with Anurag Thakur, Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India, on the 22nd of June 2022, along with Mr. Marco Díaz, chair of the eight session of the Conference of the Parties Bureau (COP8) of the International Convention against Doping in Sport.

During the meeting, Ambassador Puig and Minister Thakur expressed their desire to find areas of cooperation between the Dominican Republic and India in the field of sports. While India could help to develop disciplines like Badminton in the Dominican Republic, Ambassador Puig mentioned the good expertise of his country in contact sports as well as in track and field.

Marcos Diaz, who held the post of Vice minister of sports of the Dominican Republic from 2012 to 2020, is a former Presidential candidate for the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and had chaired the seventh session of the Conference of Parties Bureau (COP7) of the International Convention against Doping in Sport, running from 2020 to 2021.

In New Delhi, Mr. Diaz chaired the second formal meeting of the COP8 of the International Convention against Doping in Sport, which took place in hybrid format on the 21st and 22nd of June 2022.  In follow-up to the first formal meeting of the COP8 held in Dubai in march 2022, the meeting focused on the execution of the workplan for 2022-2023; an update on the  applications  approved  under  the  Anti-Doping  Fund  during  the  third  meeting  of  the  Approval Committee (New Delhi, India, 21-22 June 2022); the  improvement  and  refinement  of  the  Convention’s  monitoring  system and  resource  mobilization for  the  Convention  and  the  Fund.
