India and Dominican Republic hold 2nd Foreign Office Consultations

New Delhi –  The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic hosted in Santo Domingo the second round of Foreign Office Consultations between India and Dominican Republic on 01 July 2022.  The Indian side was led by Shri Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) and the Dominican Republic by Ambassador José Julio Gómez, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The visit to the Dominican Republic of Shri Saurabh Kumar, Secretary (East) was the first visit of a high level official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of India after the opening of the Embassy of India in the Dominican Republic in January 2022.

The Foreign Office Consultations were the occasion to review bilateral relations in the areas of trade and investment, capacity building, higher education and culture. Cooperation on space, ciber security, artificial intelligence and oceanography were included in the deliberations.  Multilateral and regional issues such as cooperation in the United Nations, International Solar Alliance (ISA) and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) were also discussed. In respect to trade, both sides recognised the potential to further deepen relations. In 2021 bilateral trade reached the mark of 1000 million dollars, with India being one of the main trade partners of the Dominican Republic.

During his visit in the Dominican Republic, Ambassador Saurabh Kumar called on Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and exchanged views on bilateral relations and on ways to strengthen the cooperation between both countries.

Both sides agreed to hold the next round of Consultations at a mutually convenient date in New Delhi.
