H.E. David Puig becomes the first Dominican Ambassador to the People's Republic of Bangladesh

NEW DELHI – On March 23, 2022, H.E. David Puig, Ambassador of the Dominican Republic to the Republic of India, presented his Letter of Credence to the President of Bangladesh, Hon’ble Mr. Abdul Hamid, in a ceremony held at Bangabhaban, Dhaka, accrediting him as concurrent Ambassador to the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

During conversations with President Abdul Hamid and with other senior officials of the Ministry of External Affairs of Bangladesh, Ambassador Puig stressed that, with his appointment as the first Dominican Ambassador to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, the Dominican government demonstrates its willingness to deepen its friendship and its cooperation with the South Asian country. On that note, he highlighted the excellent working relationship that both countries have developed in the United Nations, where the Dominican Republic has supported the initiatives presented by Bangladesh as president of the Peacebuilding Commission, where the Dominican Republic holds one of the vice presidencies. Both countries have also collaborated closely on the Executive Board of UN Women.

From Ambassador Puig's perspective, another element that brings both countries together are the similarities in their development trajectories, particularly regarding their uninterrupted economic growth over the last three decades and poverty reduction. He stated that “The People's Republic of Bangladesh is one of the main textiles producing countries in the world, and we can find synergies in this area. For Bangladeshi companies, it would be interesting to consider manufacturing in our free zone parks, in order to take advantage of the proximity to the North American market and the free trade agreements that we have signed with the United States, the European Union, Central America and the Caribbean”.

During his stay in the People's Republic of Bangladesh, Ambassador David Puig's work agenda included meetings with the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, Mr. AK Abdul Momen, and the Director General for the Americas of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh, Mr. Toufiq Islam Shatil.

In these meetings, Ambassador Puig highlighted the need to sign a memorandum of understanding on political consultations and a memorandum of understanding for the establishment of a joint working group for the promotion of trade, investment, and productive chain. He also mentioned the possibility of collaboration between the diplomatic schools of both countries.
